This exceedingly rare 19th century Mexican retablo represents The Virgin of Montserrat, a 12th century dark skinned Madonna venerated in the Santa Maria monastery in the Montserrate mountain of Catalonia, Spain. The inscription below reads: Nuestra Senora de Moncerrate a devocion de su mas indigno Esclavo' and is signed by the artist 'Francisco Coronado.'
