| This rare 19th century retablo on tin represents 'El Señor de Saucito,' an ancient Spanish devotion to Cristo, which a devotee wished to replicate when he found a naturally shaped crucifix in a tree called a "sauz." As the story goes, the Cristo was roughly carved -- the priest thought it too grotesque, and required that it be recarved by an accomplished carver if it was to survive. The Cristo was beautifully recreated, and it remains today the subject of great devotion in a small town which now is the city of San Luis Potosi. The carving is of great scale, almost life-size; with small angels suspended by wire. The retablo is displayed in a beautiful 19th century hand carved red-cedar nicho frame which is a work of art in itself.
Dimensions: 20 inches vertical x 11 inches horizontal. Retablo measures 13 inches x 9 inches. Condition: old stable splits in nicho crown |
