#4027 - La Preciosa Sangre de Cristo

This rare 19th century folk retablo represents "La Preciosa Sangre de Cristo. "La Vindimia Mistica," as it is also known, shows Christ after the Crucifixion. He is usually shown with blood flowing from the stigmata, and seven sheep drinking from the pool below. The number seven, a symbolic number in Catholicism, represents the seven holy sacraments and the seven deadly sins. The grape leaves in the upper quadrant, a eucharistic symbol, represent the blood of Christ.

This retablo is attributed to Concepcion Avila the so called "bee sting lip painter." His unique style is unmistakable.

Dimensions: 10 inches x 7 inches.

Condition is excellent with only minor paint loss.
