#4016 - San Gonsalo de Amaranto

San Gonsalo de Amaranto, a very rare theme in Mexican art, is depicted in this classic 19th century retablo. Saint Gonzalez is almost always depicted as he is here, standing over the river Tamega, in front of the bridge he built (nearly singlehandedly) near Amarante, Portugal. Gonzalez is perhaps best known for his miracles. According to legend, San Gonsalos' workers became discouraged when wine ran short, so he struck a rock with his staff and good wine flowed freely. When food supplies were low, Gonsalo went to the river banks and called the fish up to be caught. Storms ceased, droughts ended, and bread miraculously appeared in abundance.
