#3322 - San Juan Nepomuceno

This rare 19th century retablo painting represents San Juan Nepomuceno, patron saint of lawyers, secrets, bridges and floods. Saint John, ordered executed by King Wenceslaus IV for refusing to reveal the Queen's confession, was tied to a wooden wheel and thrown off a bridge into the Moldau river. Shortly after his execution seven stars hovered over the place where he drowned. In lower left the small cherub whispers "hush", a reference to San Juan's patronage; confessors, lawyers and secret keeper.
