A near perfect 19th century Mexican retablo painting of heavy gauge tin. "La Mano Poderosa," or "The Powerful Hand" - also sometimes referred to as "Los Cinco Personas," represents The Extended Holy Family. The five figures, represented clockwise rotation, depict Saint Anne, Mary, Baby Jesus, Joseph and Joachim. In the lower quadrant, blood is flowing from the stigmata into an open gold chalice which is received by the seven sacrificial lambs below. The number seven, a symbolic number in Catholicism, represents the seven holy sacraments and the seven deadly sins.
