This rare 18th century Spanish colonial oil on canvas depicts a pensive skeleton sheltering a young girl inside his rib-cage with a poetic inscription which translates as follows:
'You look well at me, because I am your mirror of that which you will have sooner or later, and in it, you will seen the nothingness of man.'
In the lower left quadrant, a cauldron of 'anima solas,' departed ancestral souls, are being swallowed up by demons and imps. In lower right, a family of lonesome souls plead for salvation in the flames of purgatory.
Displayed in a wonderful hand painted wood frame.
