This warm and richly painted early 19th century Mexican oil on canvas represents "San Rafael Archangel," patron saint of eye ailments and safe journeys. San Rafael is almost always depicted as he is here, as a winged archangel with his gourd, his traveler's staff and a fish. The fish, which he used to cure his father's blindness, is perhaps his most identifiable attribute.
