This rare 18th century oil on canvas (laid down onto a wood panel) represents San Nicolas de Tolentino, patron saint of sick animals, babies, mariners and souls in purgatory. In the periphery, much of the pigment has exfoliated, most likely from the heat of votive candles -- exposing the underlying silver primer, which has created a nearly perfect silhouette Saint Nicholas. Overall with beautiful wear, patina and cracquelure. Displayed in a handsome walnut frame.
