A superb example of 'La Alegoria de la Redencion,' one of the most obscure subjects in Mexican retablo art - circa 1875. The Allegory of the Redemption is, as the name implies, layered with allegoric and symbolic imagery throughout. In the lower quadrant a small cartouche with Adam, Eve, the serpent and the forbidden fruit is flanked by a dozen 'anima solas' in the flames of purgatory. In the upper quadrant, Christ is surrounded by a star filled sky and flanked by Saint Michael, Mater Dolorosa, the sun, the moon and the Eternal Father above.
Dimensions: 14 inches x 10 inches.
Condition: in overall excellent, original condition with beautiful surface patina.
