This very rare 19th century miniature Mexican retablo (only 5 inches x 3 inches) represents San Benito de Palermo, one of the only black saints depicted in retablo art. Saint Benedict, the patron saint of African Americans and black slaves in the Americas, is also petitioned for protection against smallpox. The retablo is displayed in a wonderful miniature punched tin nicho frame - a work of art in itself.
