This rare 19th century retablo represents "San Rafael Archangel," patron saint of eye ailments and safe journeys. San Rafael is almost always depicted as he is here, as a winged archangel, with his gourd, his traveler's staff, his cloak, and a fish. The fish, which he used to cure his father's blindness, is perhaps his most identifiable attribute.
